Fragmentation

More evidence of cluelessness. In a weird late night rage, against my better judgement, I found myself reading this article over at Phoronix, about how Ubuntu is thinking about an SDK.

A proper Ubuntu Software Development Kit would be nice for developers targeting Ubuntu SDK with a standard set of libraries/interfaces that are stable, but this isn't likely to please non-Ubuntu Linux users. This SDK that Canonical will look to push to application developers will likely be centered just around Ubuntu's needs and not the Linux ecosystem as a whole with other Linux distributions not being a focus, which could potentially lead to greater Linux desktop fragmentation.
Anyone who's been around long enough knows that any time some one of people tries to move the ball forward by doing something different, everyone thinks it's their right to crap on them. Worrying about fragmentation is the fucking dumbest thing you could do at this particular moment.

Desktop Linux is already heavily fragmented. The benefit of potentially getting major app developers to sign up far outweighs any incremental fragmentation this might create. In fact, if this actually works, I predict that suddenly every other freetard distriution will offer SDK compatibility, and then spew on about how open source is great because it allows all kinds of variation while keeping compatibility. In other words, you will see someone writing a blog post about how you can run Steam in XMonad. Because that's totally relevant, and it's the one thing that desktop Linux is missing.

It's not about how many incompatible choices there are, it's about how your users are distributed. Nobody gives a shit about how Ubuntu creating a stable SDK makes life harder for some crack-laced minty fresh Ubuntu derivative. Ubuntu already has a lot of users, if not the majority of desktop Linux users. That means this move could make desktop Linux better for the majority of users. If some big ISV signs on, it could mean that there are now 5x more Ubuntu users, making it by far the biggest majority. When Ubuntu grows the market by 5x, and owns 80% of it, the Linux desktop userbase is now less fragmented than where it started.

Fragmentation doesn't mean shit when the market is so small. Freetards argue about how things are fragmented for the 1%. Well, when you only have 1%, the problem isn't that you're too fragmented. The problem is you're not doing the right things to grow beyond 1%. Fragmentation is a problem for Android. Not desktop Linux.

But my Slackware derivative with 3 users can't use this!!! Goddamn Canonical!

Either way, this SDK is built off of other freetard projects so it's doomed to fail, anyway. Unless Canonical is gonna fork and maintain the core libraries to ensure ABI/API compatibility.

He has a good point, though. Canonical's own Python apps are terribly slow and laggy. It's also a terrible match to the predominate langauges used in most commercial software (C++, Java, C#). No company is going to have their devs learn a brand new language just to target some niche OS when there is little chance of revenue gain by doing so. Unlike with learning Objective-C to target iDevives with tons of payin customers.

While he is a tard, his overarching point is correct. Having a python-only SDK is going to turn a bunch of people off. No one is going to port complex applications to Python in order to use the Uhumptoo SDK.

Anonymous said...

You mean someone actually wants to use the Uhumtoo SDK even though there will be no backwards compatibility because of glibc, libstdc++, and X douchiness?

Anonymous said...

Or that the API will change completely in 6 months?

Anonymous said...

Steam for Linux can only exist because its basically subsidized by the Windows and OS X sales. I'm willing to bet good money that even after a year the Loonix users will only account for a couple of percent of steam users and Valve is going to put heavy spin on Linux sales figures.

Anonymous said...

You mean someone actually wants to use the Uhumtoo SDK even though there will be no backwards compatibility because of glibc, libstdc++, and X douchiness?

This is one of the reasons Freetards are all upset. If Ubuntu add in backwards compatibility, stable ABIs and whatnot they think Ubuntu "won't be Linux any more."

IMO, not being Linux anymore is a good thing.

The Dark Side of Linux Use

"Unfortunately there is a dark side to using linux. Once I started changing my OS I couldn't stop. For a while I would shift every week from; Ubuntu, to linux Mint, to Fedora, even to Joli os at one point, and many others. I always felt like there was something else, something better."

Benjamin Holmes tells me; Benjamin is a former athlete, but now he spends his time sitting on a dirty mattress in a crack den, his only friend is a dumpster dived PIII laptop running blackbelt_jones/OS, while his diet consists of Cheetos scavenged from skips out the back of his local Tesco.

"I used to be an athlete." He says, looking down dejectedly at his Cheetos stained shirt that barely covers a couple of rolls of fat and a pair of anaemic, spindly legs.

It's hard to imagine what he looked like in his prime, Benjamin was indeed an athlete, he was looking forward to competing for Team GB at London 2012, instead he stayed at home and installed Slackware.

"I didn't even remember or notice the Olympics happening," he admits.

"It's strange, I used to have everything people normally want, a great career ahead of me, doing well in Uni, a lovely girlfriend." His eyes become misty as he remembers his previous life. "Then I gave it all up," at this point he stops speaking long enough to make a sweeping gesture at the room, there's no window and the door barely lets in any light, so its piss stained, mouldy walls are only just visible by the glow of the laptop's screen, "for this." He concludes, and "this" is a sorry sight indeed.

He tells me he's not sure he could give up the Linux Life, he's not even sure he wants to. "There are thousands of distros to try, what if the one I haven't tried yet is the best?" This was also what he told his parents and girlfriend, when they tried to co-ordinate an intervention last year, to urge him to give up his habit.

I asked him if there's any help for others like him, but he shakes his head, he doesn't know. I doubt he goes outside much except to scavenge for Cheetos and Mountain Dew, just another member of a hidden sub-class in society, but Linux users account for 1% of our population, a figure some say is rising. While there are assistance programs for Linux users, they require the "Distro Hopper" as they're called in Linux parlance to find help by themselves; this experience leads me to believe that -unless more outreach work is done by excellent charities like The Linux Haters' Blog- those who need help the most are being left behind.

Not sure Freetardia write most of their apps in Python, it mostly seems to be C/C++ (bad C/C++, but still). I'm not sure Canonical even do most of their stuff in Python, Poonity and Cumpiz are C++, for example.

But yeah, whatever, keep FlyingJavaMoncoToaster flailing everyone, it's amusing.

Wow, two whole examples. Well Bazaar, Uhumptoo Software Center, Launchpad, Storm, Quickly and many other Canonical software is written in Python. Your ignorance of this doesn't change that.

Fragmentation is a problem for Android.

I am not as much a fan of Android as I used to (now that WP8 is here), but I 've got to give it to Google for "keeping the balances".

For example, they will allow OEMs to do stuff on Android, like adds skins to differentiate their products, but they will not allow them to mess with the APIs (they can add APIs like stereoscopic 3D but not change any of the core ones). Otherwise, no Play Store for the misbehaving OEM. So, Android might have version fragmentation, but it does not have internal competition between APIs -the worst kind of fragmentaton- like Linux Desktop has. Sure, version fragmentation is a problem (there will be some butt hurt by users when developers decide to ditch the 2.x APIs and move 4.x only), but Android remains a platform devs can target (much like Windows and Windows Phone), unlike Desktop Linux which is a mess.

Another example of Google keeping the balances is the Nexus program. They will release a Nexus (for those who want The Real Android), but they will have some OEM build it and the OEM keeps the profits (like Asus does with Nexus 7). So, OEMS don't feel "cheated" when a Nexus arrives, because Google practically acts as a subcontractor to them. Unlike Microsoft, that got Apple envy and made a device completely of their own (Surface). Now, OEMs are on a competitive disadvantage compared to Microsoft hardware, because they must pay Microsoft the 60$ royalty for the OS, while Microsoft "pays themselves" for the OS royalties of the Surface. So, OEMs felt cheated and some of them are already jumping ship (HP). Ooops!

Google looks like they have this kind of business genius Microsoft had in the 90s.

As regards the post, it seems Shuttleworth wants to rewrite Linux Desktop piece by piece, by he doesn't have the monies to rewrite the two things that matter: X.org and PulseAudio.
And what happened to the "Sputnik" project that was supposed to provide a laptop that is fully Ubunu compatible? Shuttleworth has the attention span of an ADD patient.

PyPy is not several orders of magnitude slower than C.

Yes it is. Consistently so.

In fact, PyPy can get faster than C in certain cases.

Maybe in some completely artificial example like doing a single method call in a loop. But in real applications it is quite slower.

The bottom line is that we don't have to worry about PyPy being slow.

Yeah, being slow, laggy and unresponsive is ok! You can just throw a 16-core, 64GB of RAM computer at it!

Anonymous said...

@November 1, 2012 3:30 AM

Your entire post addresses exactly jack and shit of the Android fragmentation problems that Linux Hater refers to. Android fragmentation is a combination of the lack of phones being upgrade to latest OS versions and the huge combination of GPUs, CPUs, display resolutions, and capabilities of all the Android phones which make it a nightmare to design and test applications that can possibly work on all of them. Nexus phones make up like 1% of all phones sold so it hardly brings any "balance" to things.

Of course it would, but it would be more productive if it were mono because developers care about productivity, right?

Lazy troll is lazy.

Most of the package management backends and quite a few of the frontends from the losstards are written in python.

If you want to attack the losstards over language supremacy issues, you should at least have some knowledge of what languages they are using.

How would having to rewrite your entire app into Python to use the SDK be "more productive" than one that is written in one of the dominant languages used in commercial apps (of which Python is not one). It's not. Mono or C/C++ pretty much covers like 90+% of commercial apps that would possible use this SDK. Also, "productivity" is extremely relative. I'm hugely productive in both C++ and C# yet I hate using Python or Java because I spend more time fighting the language because of stupid forced restrictions and their idiosyncrasies.

PyPy is not several orders of magnitude slower than C.

As another anon has stated, yes it is, horribly, by several orders of magnitude.

In fact, PyPy can get faster than C in certain cases.

The one case that you freetards are furiously wanking your micropeens over is the botched attempt at a loop with strings where the C implementation prints and the Python version does not.

There are no other benchmarks to date that demonstrate any other example. Try a bubble sort, generating a linked list and traversing through it several milllion times, try writing a ray-tracer and compare the two and see how your shitty little scripting language fairs.

The bottom line is that we don't have to worry about PyPy being slow.

Of course you don't, you're not writing anything that has to be used professionally or that requires the exchanging of money. You'll write your shitty little widgets for Ooompoopoo that allow basement dwelling freetards to jizz themselves over setting the color on their weather widget or something similarly inane.
